WATERCOLOR MIXED MEDIA: PAINTING ANIMALS
TUESDAYS 6:30-8:30pm
Ages 12+
12 Weeks for $299 (price is prorated for late enrollees)
Located in South Salt Lake
2900 South 300 West, South Salt Lake, UT, 84115
We will be exploring watercolors and how to incorporate other materials to enhance the depth of our artwork. Focusing on animals this semester—fur, feathers, and extra legs—will give us a great way to explore how to create new textures by adding in multiple materials. We will be working on both guided and self-directed projects to help you build confidence in your watercolor skills while trying new materials. Students will be able to work alongside the teacher for guided paintings and see demos of specific techniques before starting independent projects.
This is a great class for those looking to explore new ways of working with watercolors as well as trying new materials. A basic understanding of watercolors is recommended to get the most out of this class however if you are willing to jump in and practice new things you are welcome.
Taught by Lyra Zoe Smith
Students are responsible for bringing their own supplies and reading our Policies.

Some mixed media supplies will be provided, however students are encouraged to bring in their own if they have any materials they would like to try to incorporate.

Watercolors. Make sure to get watercolors not gouache. Many of these options are also available locally at Blick or Michael's as well as online.
Not all inexpensive Watercolors work great but these Crayola's do the trick!...make sure the Crayola's say "Educational" if getting these!
Other watercolors I can recommend:
If buying Individual tubes make sure you start with these colors and add on from there if you desire:
Lemon yellow
Cad yellow light or medium
Yellow ochre
Cad red light
Alizarin crimson
Ultramarine blue
Prussian blue
Hooker’s green
Burnt sienna
Watercolor paper: Cold press watercolor paper is best to use in my classes as they hold more water. This is what I use in class. You can pick it up at any walmart:
Watercolor Brushes (Various Sizes and Shapes). I use a variety of brushes but my favorite are Princeton "round" and "long round" size 10 and 14 from Blick for larger areas and their smaller brushes for details size 2 and 0/5. Make sure to get a larger brush as well as a small detail brush if buying separately, but here are inexpensive set options you can try:
Pencils and Erasers
Grey Kneaded Eraser
Kitchen Paper Towels or Blue Shop Paper Towels
Artist Masking Tape
White Gelly Roller Pens
Micron Pens
Small Board to tape down your watercolor paper (drawing board, Masonite board, gatorboards, or plastic sheet like plexiglass)
If you decide to get tube watercolors, get yourself a pallet to put your paints in. With smaller watercolor pan sets you may also want a larger flat pallet for paint mixing in your kit.
