Located at the Highland Community Center

Come learn the basics of oil painting using a variety of subject matters and approaches. This foundational oil painting class is a good fit for those just beginning, as well as the Intermediate student who wants to pick their own subject matter. There will be instructor demonstrations and paint-a-longs for the beginners, while the intermediate students who have studied oil paints before will be able to bring in their own subject matter and be coached throughout the project. Subject reference will be offered and universal art concepts of oil painting will be discussed each week.

Taught by Shelley Young

Students are responsible for bringing their own supplies and reading our Policies.

Supply List:

  • 8 - 10 gessoed boards. You can buy masonite or canvas board. Stretched canvas will work, but it is often loose and bouncy. I prefer a more firm surface to paint on. 12 x16 is the recommended size.

  • Pint of gesso

  • Oil painting brushes: Each type of brush is numbered differently, so get a variety of large, medium, and small brushes in both hog bristle and sable style (soft) brushes:
