Elementary Classes • 4:30-6:00pm
Supplies are included in the tuition fee for elementary students.
Mondays (in Sugarhouse) Tuesdays (at Eastmont) • Intro to Drawing
Suggested for new students, the Introduction to drawing class emphasizes drawing techniques, concepts and terminology, but is a broader survey of art forms and mediums. You will learn to draw and paint what you see and get to use materials like pencil, ink, charcoal, watercolor, and clay.
Tuesdays • CERAMICS (Animalia)
Build your own whimsical menagerie in clay. Learn proper hand building techniques while using an array of tools that might surprise you to achieve texture and form. Develop dexterity and patience through a variety of fun projects that hone your 3-D skill. (Both locations)
Wednesdays • LARGE FORMAT DRAWING (Charcoal)
Charcoal is the perfect medium to learn to draw on a larger surface. We will work on 18" x 24" sheets of paper with vine charcoal, charcoal pencils, and compressed charcoal. Come explore the versatility of charcoal. (Both locations)
Thursdays • DRAWING with Transparency
Come explore how transparent objects such as glass bottles are rendered and how the overlapping planes of value or color are impacted by each other and how light refracts through liquids and distortions through transparency. (Both locations)
Jr. High & High School Classes • 4:30-6:30pm in Salt Lake & 4-6pm in Sandy
Jr. & High School students provide their own supplies. Instructors will provide a list of suggested supplies.
Mondays • ANATOMICAL DRAWING
This class will focus on the basic structural landmarks of the figure as it relates to Figure Drawing. Students will draw the skeletal structure and the superficial musculature of the human form. This will be linked to the general proportions of the body and will help students create more accurate drawings. (Sugarhouse only)
Tuesdays • BOOK MAKING
This class will introduce students to the creative world of handmade books. Students will create their own sketchbook, a drawing portfolio, and another fun blank book using Japanese binding methods. This is a great class to become more familiar with papers and design principles. (Both locations)
Wednesdays • WATERCOLOR PAINTING
This class guides students through the fresh and translucent medium of watercolor. This class will focus on techniques and methods used to create landscape and still life paintings. Students will learn to apply washes such as wet on wet, graded washes, masking and watercolor brushwork along with the principles of composition. (Both locations)
Thursdays • ABSTRACT PAINTING TECHNIQUES
Often when someone sees an abstract painting they exlaim, "a five year old could do that!" What they fail to understand is good abstract painting requires a sound knoledge of the Art Elements and their Governing Principles. Students will explore mark making with a variety of materials to create visually stimulating imagery. (Both locations)
Adult students provide their own supplies (instructors will provide a list of suggested supplies).
Saturdays • Figure Drawing 9:30am-12:30pm
Learn to draw the figure while observing models with instructor Bruce Robertson. (Sugarhouse only)
Mondays • Foundation Drawing Noon-2pm
Learn to draw the basics. (Sugarhouse only)
Figure (Drawing/Painting)Through this course students will learn to draw and/or paint the human figure, while expanding their abilities with the principles and elements of art. Students will have the opportunity to explore a variety of materials if they wish. This course is for students who are self-motivated and willing to create a lot of work on their own. Students will attend open studio figure drawing sessions in the community and meet with a faculty member once a week at VAI to discuss their progress in-depth, receive critiques of their work, and discuss the work of contemporary figurative artists. This course will be an engaging exploration of considerations of the human figure in contemporary artwork, while developing technical skill. This course is specifically designed to help develop strong portfolio artwork.

Special Projects (Any Media)In this course students will have the opportunity to design their own project. This course requires students to be self-motivated and willing to create work on their own. Students will have the opportunity to meet with a faculty member once a week to discuss their progress in-depth and receive feedback and critiques of their work. Students will also study the work of relevant contemporary artists. This course will build individual skills and creative thinking. This course is specifically designed to help students accomplish outstanding artwork in a broad array of art disciplines for their portfolios.
Jr. High and High School students should generally be able to register for this class at any time. Tuition for this course is $285 (Non refundable). Contact the office for more details.
College Preparation Program (Portfolio - Preparation)Students will take a closer look at the quality and quantity of their artwork. They will create new work and select their very best artwork for portfolios to apply to university art programs and art schools. Students will learn to demonstrate competency and proficiency with the elements and principles of art, while developing a personal direction for their portfolio. They will also be required to keep a sketchbook to show their personal growth, ideas, and changes in their personal imagery. Each student will also learn the process of documenting and producing a professional presentation of their work. Learning to put together a professional portfolio will be a valuable skill for any art career. Students will meet with faculty periodically from the date they begin this program until they submit their portfolios during their senior year of high school.
